Chapter 20

Escape

While I was out chasing down Hobs, my neighbors noticed I had not yet arrived for dinner.

“You did remember to invite Susan for dinner, didn’t you?” Larry asked his wife as he sat at the table staring at the pizza she made.

“Yes, I did. Hmm, she’s late. Maybe she’s in the middle of something,” Trisha said.

Trisha’s cell phone beeped. By the ID screen, the caller was Sally Montgomery.

“Hello Sally, how many ghosts have you got by now? Oh, no, I didn’t know. No, Susan didn’t tell me. What? She did what? Thank you, I’ll tell Larry and we can go look for her.

“What’s going on?” Larry asked

“Sally said Susan tackled Hobs on her front lawn and walked off with him.”

“Isn’t he a little old for her?”

“Very funny. No, she was worried earlier that he might be responsible with this rash of thefts occurring in our town.”

“I find that hard to believe, but I have seen him sneaking around town.”

“Get your coat. We’re going to find her. I’ll leave a note when the kids get back for their party. Oh, and what about Mickie?”

“He’s got that dog door, remember? Don’t worry about him,” he said, grabbing his jacket from one of the hooks near their back door. Larry flipped the switch above their doorknob and headed out into the moonlight.

Hobs, Wolf, Huldra, and I crept along the pathway over to the back of the fortress. As castles go, this was about two or three stories high and made of stone. I decided the structure looked more like a haunted house.

“What was I thinking of?” I asked myself as I crouched down. “Is this the most stupid idea I have ever done or what?”

I learned later that while I remained hiding behind a bush in front of the stronghold, my short friend was guiding the others around until they could see the barred basement windows. Wolf had loosened one of the bars from the window frame to allow Hobs to slide down to Niki’s cot.

Hobs faced the brick wall in the prison cell and uttered his old words “Fumble, rumble to a room I know. Open a door to a wall I bore,” to create an opening. He had counted his footsteps from Susan’s house to Bailory and hoped he was close to his destination when an opened door appeared.

“Fumble, rumble to a room I know. Open a door to a wall I bore,” he uttered

Niki, the elves and spirits could see a small modest bedroom on the other side of the wall. Hobs guided Niki through and strolled in after her. He waited until the door disappeared and guided her to the chest of drawers.

He gestured Niki to climb the chest of drawers up to the small window. He had to hurry back outside and save Susan.

Niki climbed the furniture and opened the window. Hobs held the chest of drawers steady while she climbed out into the window well. He then climbed out while Niki pulled on his arms to help him through.
